The best yoga mats for your needs

One of the great things about yoga is that you can basically practise it anywhere at any time. Unlike other forms of movement and exercise, you do not need to buy expensive equipment or go to a gym to practice. Yes, there is a lot of props you can get, like blocks and straps, but the only thing you really need is a mat. The yoga mat is essential. And yes, comfy clothes are a plus, or you just practice naked, like me. This way you save money and do something good for the environment as you need to do less laundry.

Depending on whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner or whether you practice at home or travel a lot, you have different needs and expectations of what your yoga mat can provide. And since we are in lockdown number 2 here in UK, at the moment it might be worth investing into a proper mat, as you can easily practice “live” with me online.

Below you will find my three favourites yoga mats for all types of situations and experience levels:

Travel Yoga Mat

If you live a life on the go this is the perfect mat for you. With its 0.68kg, the Jade Voyager Yoga Mat is very lightweight and small. You can fold it to the size of a yoga block to put it into your suitcase or backpack. The mat is made from natural rubber, tapped from rubber trees and provides great grip, even when sweating. It easy to clean with soap and water and is eco-friendly. In fact Jade plants a tree for every mat sold, meaning you do something good for the environment when buying one.The only downside is that due to its thinness (0.16cm) the mat does not provide real cushioning for your wrists or knees.

Foldable Yoga Mat

This Foldable Yoga Mat is another good option if you like to take your yoga practice outdoors. In times of Covid-19 in many countries yoga studios had to close down, but once they reopen, it is mandatory to bring your own equipment. So if you are looking for a mat you can easily take to work with you, this is the one. It is foldable which makes it easy to carry in a bag. You can easily clean it with running water and lay it out to dry afterwards. If you prefer an intense practice or do hot yoga, it might become slippery and not provide the support needed though.

Thicker Yoga Mat

The Yoga-Mad Sure-Grip Latex Yoga Mat is great for practising at home. It is made from natural latex, hand tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree. With its cotton webbing inside it is completely made from renewable resources and biodegradable. You can even wash it in the machine by rolling it in a towel without dry spinning it. The 4mm thickness makes it well cushioned and gives some extra love to your wrists and knees. It furthermore offers an unrivalled grip in all conditions, whilst also being soft to touch. With the weight being 2kg the mat is heavier than the others and non-foldable. Need a reason to buy a new yoga mat or try it out?
